Albendazole is a antihelmintic of benzimidazole carbamate group. Albendazole is effective in preventing the parasites fumarate reductase activity. It increase the use of glycogen when prevents the absorption of glucose in parasits, and reduced the amount of ATP, leads to the death of the parasite. It is absorbed in 6-30 hours through the gastrointestinal tract and reaches a peak plasma concentration of drug. It protects concentration of more effective long-term of intestinal contents and blood plasma, caused by have the half-life that is longer than Benzimidazole derivatives. Thus, it is effective to mature larvae and adult nematodes for a long time. 28% of an orally administered dose in 24 hours and 47% of the total 9-day period, is excreted in urine.
Group of benzimidazole compounds may be resistant to Ostertagia, T.colubriformis and H. Concortus. Antihelmintics of benzimidazole group have a limited effect against the parasites of Trichuris sp., Setaria and Onchocerca.
